Watts Scores 35 In Rout Of UNCW, 82-55
December 5, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Stephanie Watts threatened multiple school scoring records on Wednesday in leading North Carolina to a commanding 82-55 victory over UNCW from Carmichael Arena.
The win was head coach Sylvia Hatchell's 739th at North Carolina, tying her with former Virginia coach Debbie Ryan for the most wins all-time by an Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball coach. Hatchell will go for the record Sunday against UNCG at 2 p.m.
Watts scored 35 points - the most in the ACC this season - and converted nine three-pointers in leading the way for North Carolina (6-4), who snapped a mini three-game skid with the win.
The Wesley Chapel, N.C., native would score 26 points in the first half behind six long-distance bombs. Watts scored all of her 35 points through three quarters and it seemed at that moment there was a realistic chance of her setting the program's single game points record of 42 set by Tracy Reid against Virginia on Jan. 15, 1998.
Watts is now the owner of the top two 3-point shooting performances in school history. She set the ACC record with 10 from downtown against Charleston Southern on Nov. 22, 2016. She finished that night with a career-high 39 against the Lady Bucs.
Shayla Bennett tossed in 16 points and dished out eight assists for the Tar Heels, while Janelle Bailey registered her fifth double-double in 10 games this season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Tyler Koenen also had a double-double, the fifth of her career, on 11 points and 12 boards.
GiGi Smith paced UNCW (5-3) with 21 points, while Shrita Parker added 14.
Carolina also tied its team record with 14 three-pointers. 11 of them came in the opening half that staked the Heels to a 55-23 lead at intermission.
The Tar Heels saw the lead grow to as many as 38 points in the third quarter, before closing out the Seahawks for the third time in as many games in the series.
