February 23, 2018 | Baseball
Greenville, N.C. – The Tar Heels lost a low scoring affair in Greenville Friday night as they fell to ECU 2-1 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. Pitchers on both teams combined for 25 strikeouts on the evening as the Tar Heels only registered two hits to bring home its lone run.
The Pirates got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning to take the early 2-0 lead. Jake Washer started things off with a single to centerfield before a Chandler Jenkins double off the wall put men on second and third with no outs. Connor Litton hit in to a fielders choice and was thrown out at first base, but not before Washer crossed the plate to make it 1-0. With the infield drawn in for a potential play at home, Drew Henrickson hit a chopper over first base to bring in Jenkins for the second run of the inning.
Carolina cut the Pirates lead in half in the top of the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Ike Freeman to score Dylan Enwiller and make it 2-1. Enwiller was hit in the hand to start the inning before taking second after a failed pickoff attempt from the Pirates. Martorano followed with a single to right field to put runners on the corners before Freeman's sacrifice fly was caught at the warning track as Enwiller jogged home.
Gianluca Dalatri and Brett Daniels kept the Pirates off the scoreboard for the rest of the game, but the Tar Heels couldn't plate another run to they fell, 2-1.
Dalatri picks up his second loss for the Tar Heels on the season as he went 5.1 innings, gave up two runs and struck out seven batters while only issuing one walk. In relief, Daniels threw 2.2 innings with no hits or walks while striking out five of his eight batters.
The Tar Heels will face the Pirates on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park before closing the series at Boshamer Stadium at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
