CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Five Carolina gymnasts were selected to compete at the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional competition in Raleigh, N.C. hosted by NC State on Saturday, April 7th, at 4 p.m. EST.
Out of the eight individual event specialist positions, Carolina fills six of them in addition to two of the four alternate spots. UNC's all-around competitor Morgan Lane will also have an opportunity to compete in the NCAA tournament.
"Coaches Marie Denick and Taylor Spears and I are thrilled that we have five of our team members moving onto NCAA competition," said UNC head coach Derek Galvin. "Morgan Lane, Khazia Hislop, Madison Nettles, Mikayla Robinson, and Kaitlynn Hedelund have all shown exceptional performances at times during the season, and we are really happy they will have the opportunity to move onto the NCAA postseason competition."
Senior Morgan Lane was the top all-around competitor selected to compete with LSU, Nebraska, Oregon State, George Washington, NC State, and Maryland. Additionally, sophomore Khazia Hislop was chosen to be an event specialist on vault, balance beam, and floor exercise after winning the title of EAGL Champion on floor exercise. The 2018 EAGL Co-Champion on vault Madison Nettles will compete alongside Hislop as the other vault specialist and is currently the alternate on floor. Senior Kaitlynn Hedelund was selected to compete as a specialist on the uneven bars, and sophomore Mikayla Robinson will compete on floor exercise. Alexis Allen is also an alternate for balance beam should Hislop or Towson's Gabreilla Yarussi pull out of the competition.
"One of the exciting things that we experienced this year was that we had so many gymnasts set new personal bests… To see Madison Nettles have a personal best at the EAGL Championships and for Morgan Lane to tie a personal best, we're very happy for the athletes. It's a reflection of the hardworking they've put in this season and the hardwork that the coaching staff has put in."
The NCAA selections recognized the Tar Heels' accomplishments this season as both competitors on vault and floor as well as the alternate on floor are North Carolina gymnasts. Carolina finished the season ranked sixth in the nation on floor exercise (RQS 49.395) and T-15th on vault (RQS 49.155), and Khazia Hislop and Madison Nettles recently won individual titles as EAGL Champions on floor and vault, respectively.
