March 29, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Both coming off midweek wins, Carolina travels to Virginia for an ACC series Friday and Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Tar Heels are 5-1 since beginning their 10-game trip on March 20 while the Cavaliers have won two of their past six.
The series begins Friday at 6 p.m. at The Park on the North Grounds. The Tar Heels and Cavaliers wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action via the ACC Network Extra or live stats at VirginiaSports.com.
About Virginia
The Cavaliers (10-22, 1-8 ACC) remain home to host the Tar Heels following a 12-9 win over George Mason Wednesday. UVA's first home win came against Syracuse on March 17 in 11 innings. Allison Davis posts a team-best .400 average with 32 RBI while Lacy Smith and Erika Osherow split time in the circle each with about 80 innings pitched
The Series
UNC leads the series, 86-33-1, taking the most recent meeting in an 8-7 victory on April 2, 2017 in chapel Hill. The Tar Heels and Cavaliers first met on March 31, 1984 in Lynchburg, Virginia. The two faced off 36 times before their first conference matchup on April 23, 1992. UVA won the inaugural ACC meeting, sweeping the doubleheader in 1992. Since then, the Tar Heels hold a 50-13 edge in conference play, including a 12-game ACC win streak from April 6, 2012 to March 29, 2015.
Recently for the Tar Heels
The Tar Heels (17-16, 5-3 ACC) have won 11 of their past 14 games, including a ACC series sweep of Duke, nonconference wins over USC-Upstate and Winthrop, and a 2-1 series win at Notre Dame. Going 3-for-4 with three runs at Winthrop, Leah Murray holds a team-best .337 average, logging an ACC-best 23 stolen bases. Taylor Wike tops the team leaderboards in doubles (6), home runs (7), slugging percentage (.653), walks (14) and on-base percentage (.436). With a 15-5 record, Brittany Pickett has been dominant in the circle, tossing 173.1 of Carolina's 225.1 innings pitched and picking up five wins March 20-28. Most recently, Carolina topped Winthrop, 10-4 with 15 hits and five multi-hit at-bats Wednesday evening in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Murray and Wike each had three hits while Kristina Burkhardt, Katie Bailiff and Destiny DeBerry slugged two each. Logging her first home run of the season, Bailiff led Carolina's offense with three RBI while Wike and Burkhardt each plated two runs.
Pickett Collects Second ACC Pitcher of the Week Honor
Tossing each of North Carolina's four wins, sophomore Brittany Pickett was named the ACC's Pitcher of the Week, for the second time this season on March 27. Pickett limited her opponents to a .196 clip with a 1.25 ERA. Giving up only two earned runs in the doubleheader, Pickett threw both games of the midweek twin bill at USC-Upstate, including a complete-game shutout in the nightcap. The sophomore's success continued at Notre Dame where she limited the ACC's best offense to a .231 average between two games during the series - nearly .100 below ND's season average. After throwing three complete games, Pickett closed out the weekend with a 1-0 shutout win in Sunday's pitchers' duel against Notre Dame.
Down Go The Irish
With the series tied at one win each, Sunday's game at Notre Dame was for the all the marbles. Thanks to a five-run third inning, Carolina topped Notre Dame in Friday's series opener for the 7-4 win behind Brittany Pickett's 15th complete game and four RBI off of Kristina Burkhardt. Despite the Carolina leadoff batter reaching in every inning Saturday, Notre Dame capitalized on the Tar Heels' five miscues for the 9-1 win in six innings, evening up the series 1-1. Building on the first two days of competition, it was only fitting that the winner would not be determined until the final inning. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Carolina came out on top in a 1-0 pitchers' duel against Notre Dame to take the series Sunday. Pickett tossed a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts while Berlynne Delamora plated the game-winning run in the final inning for Carolina's sixth ACC win of the season and second series win.
