Tar Heels Reset Single-Season Stolen Base Record in Loss to Liberty
April 25, 2018 | Softball
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Despite falling to Liberty on Wednesday, Carolina broke the program's single-season stolen base record with two to total 107 on the season in the 8-0, five inning setback in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Â
A stolen base in the first by Kiani Ramsey tied the record set by the 2017 team, before Leah Murray reset the record with Carolina's 107th stolen base.
Â
However, three singles in addition to the pair of stolen bases would be the only Carolina offense for the evening. Taylor Wike singled in the fourth and  Destiny DeBerry extended her hitting streak on an infield single in the third.
Â
The Flames scored in every inning before finalizing the game in the fifth inning for the walk-off win. Carolina now sits at 27-24 on the season while Liberty improves to 37-12.
Â
A two run-double by Kaitlin McFarland gave the Flames the lead in the first before a wild pitch and sac-fly by Autumn Bishop doubled the score by the second inning.
Â
Liberty tacked on a fifth run in the third, scoring Sarah Robertson before Bishop cleared the park for a six-run edge.
Â
The Flames finalized the game in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single. An RBI-single by Deidra See plated the seventh run before the game-winner crossed the plate on a Carolina miscue.
Â
Liberty's Julia DiMartino picked up the complete-game shutout in the circle while Brittany Pickett took the loss.
Â
Carolina wraps up conference play at Syracuse Friday through Sunday in Syracuse, New York. The Tar Heels conclude the regular season May 4 at 7 p.m. vs. Campbell. Â
