Carolina Falls to UNCW, 3-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Tar Heels scattered seven hits throughout Tuesday's nonconference game at UNCW, but the Seahawks came out on top for a 3-0 win in Wilmington.

Kristina Burkhardt and Kiani Ramsey led Carolina's offense with two hits apiece, while Leah Murray, Taylor Wike and Destiny DeBerry each logged one. Carolina left eight runners on base in the loss, falling to 19-18 on the year while UNCW improved to 11-19.

The Tar Heels and Seahawks battled through four scoreless innings before a run crossed the plate, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to clinch the win of for UNCW.

The Tar Heels loaded the bases on a walk and pair of singles by Murray and Burkhardt, but could not capitalize in the first inning. Ramsey singled in the second and Burkhardt logged her second hit in the third. Ramsey followed suit in the fourth before DeBerry made it to second on a bunt single then a throwing error by the Seahawks in the next frame but could not come around to score.

A Carolina miscue and a pass ball set the stage for Lacey Fox's second home run of the season, giving the Seahawks a 2-0 lead in the fifth. UNCW tacked on one more unearned run in the sixth on Meghan Whitecavage's RBI single to center.

Murray reached on a UNCW miscue in the seventh, but the Tar Heels could not muster a run. Kellyn Daly took the loss in 5.1 innings, giving up a single earned run, while Hannah Nommensen tossed the final two outs in relief. The Seahawks' Rylee Pate went the distance for the win and her second complete game of the season.

The Tar Heels return home Wednesday for a 5 p.m. matchup versus UNCG before hosting Virginia Tech Friday through Sunday at Anderson Stadium.
