May 11, 2018 | Softball
ATLANTA – After a two hour and 30 minute weather delay, North Carolina rallied past Georgia Tech, 6-1 on Thursday night into Friday morning to clinch the win in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal at Mewborn Field. Carolina advances to take on Pittsburgh Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the semifinal round.
The Yellow Jackets scored first on an RBI-single in the third. However, Carolina quickly answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame before adding four in the sixth to solidify the win and improve to 30-25 on the season. Georgia Tech caps off its season with a 28-26 mark.
Brittany Pickett led the way for Carolina both in the circle and at the plate. Now 28-11 on the season, the sophomore struck out seven while going 2-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run and the game-winning RBI-single in the third. Taylor Wike, Destiny DeBerry and Kiani Ramsey also logged two hits at the plate while Wike led the stolen base column with two, upping UNC's season total to 115.
"Georgia Tech swings the bats well, but Brittany got stronger as the innings went on and did a really nice job of keeping their hitters off balance," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "We did had some great defensive plays with Taylor's at short and Kiani's grab in center. We just did some really good things tonight. We kept pushing Georgia Tech's pitcher and got 12 hits off of her which we were unable to do during the series this year. The top of our lineup put the ball in play and Destiny did well with her slaps and base-running. I was really pleased and proud of how the team responded tonight."
After trading hits throughout the first two innings before, Georgia Tech struck first on an RBI-single by Katie Krzus. However, the Jackets' lead was short lived as Carolina answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. A single followed by heads up base-running by DeBerry knotted the game at one. Pickett gave the Tar Heels the lead on an RBI single through the right side.
UNC loaded the bases in the fourth on a Tech miscue and a pair of hits by Katelyn Shifflett and DeBerry. However, the Tar Heels were unable to capitalize, maintaining the one-run lead in the fourth.
Carolina's bats came alive in the sixth inning as the Tar Heels tacked on four runs to ensure the quarterfinal round victory. DeBerry reached first on a Tech miscue before Leah Murray's single to center moved UNC into scoring position. A bunt-single by Ramsey and a second GT error in the inning allowed DeBerry and Murray to come home before Wike drove in Ramsey for a 5-1 lead. Pickett finalized the score with her eighth home run of the season for a the 6-1 decision.
The Tar Heels return to Mewborn Field Friday at 3:30 p.m. to face #2 Pitt in the ACC Tournament Semifinal. Fans can watch on the ACC's Regional Sport Networks and the ACC Network Extra (subject to black out).
