June 1, 2018 | Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS – University of North Carolina senior Kenny Selmon has been named the men's track southeast region athlete of the year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association, announced Friday by the USTFCCCA.
Selmon, a four-time All-America performer, is currently ranked second nationally in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 48.91 that he ran at the NCAA East Preliminary Round to qualify for next week's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Selmon is undefeated across all heats in the event this season and has run sub-49 in three races on the year – all times that rank top 20 in the world.
He has been All-America three times in the 400 hurdles, twice as a first-team selection. In 2016, Selmon finished third in the event in the NCAA final, and in 2017, he finished fourth. In his first appearance at the national championships in 2015, Selmon took 12th in the semifinals.
Selmon owns the UNC record in the 400 hurdles, a time of 48.60 that he ran in the 2017 NCAA final to break Ken Harnden's 22-year-old record in the event.
He has won back-to-back ACC titles in the long hurdles (2017, 2018) and also anchored the men's outdoor 4x400 to an ACC title this season.
Selmon heads to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. next week (June 6-9). He will compete in the 400-meter hurdles semifinals on Wednesday, June 6, at 9:30 p.m. ET, and the final is on Friday, June 8, at 9:57 p.m. ET. He joins Caroline Alcorta (women's 10,000m), Morgan Ilse (women's 5,000m), Anna Keefer (women's long jump) and Jill Shippee (women's hammer throw) in the group representing North Carolina in Eugene.
