June 20, 2018 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina volleyball is pleased to announce the addition of Skylar Wine and Erin Boone to the 2018 team. Boone begins her freshman year this fall while Wine transfers from University of the Pacific as a junior.
"We feel very fortunate to be able to add two quality student-athletes this time of the year to our 2018 roster," head coach Joe Sagula said. "Skylar Wine will have an impact with her experience as both a left and right side pin and being a six-rotation player. She has the ability to compete immediately and be a good leader for this young team. Erin Boone has a unique skill-set, she can add versatility to our roster while playing as an opposite, defender, and setting as well adding to the team's needed depth in 2018."
Name: Skylar Wine
Position: Outside Hitter
Height: 6-2
Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona
High School: Sunnyslope
Previous: University of the Pacific
Club Team: Aspire Volleyball Club
Skylar Wine transfers to North Carolina from Pacific in Stockton, California where she played in 29 matches and 101 sets. She logged 191 kills to average 1.89 kills per set, adding on 42 digs and 33 total blocks in 2017. In the postseason, Wine totaled eight kills and six blocks in the women's National Invitational Volleyball Championship. On the beach circuit, Wine garnered second-team all-conference honors earlier this year. At Sunnyslope High School, Wine garnered PrepVolleyball All-America and All-Arizona Team Arizona Republic honors as a junior. The two-time Division 2 first-team selection guided Sunnyslope to back-to-back state championships. The four-year honor roll member helped her club team to top-five finishes at the Arizona Region finals three years, including a Regional Championship and a third place finish at Nationals in 2016.
"I am very excited to be adding Skylar as a Tar Heel," Sagula said. "Any time you can bring six-rotation player to the team that is a bonus. Skylar is a smart volleyball player that can compete for us immediately. Her ability to attack and score within a fast offensive system at either pin, along with her ball-handling experience from both indoor and beach will be a great addition. Skylar has the skills set and the passion to play hard, and as a veteran she will be a stabilizing player for this young team and can provide some leadership on the court as well. I feel confident that she will continue to grow as a player at UNC with her strong values and work ethic both in the classroom and on the court."Â
Name: Erin Boone
Position: Setter/Opposite
Height: 6-1
Hometown: Cary, North Carolina
High School: Green Hope
Club Team: Triangle
A two-time conference champion, Erin Boone guided her team to two North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state championships at Green Hope High School. She was named a first-team all-conference selection as a sophomore and a North Carolina state beach volleyball finalist as a junior. Named to the 2017 AVCA Under Armour Watch List, Boone guided her team to three second place finishes at NEQ, the City of Oaks Challenge and MAPL Hampton Roads. Boone was captain for both Green Hope and Triangle during her senior year. She was also co-editor-in-chief of the Green Hope Year Book and a member of the Beta Club. A North Carolina academic scholar, Boone graduated Green Hope with honors and was a member of National Honor Society.
"I really like Erin's versatility and her work ethic," Sagula said. "I feel she can add to the team dynamic on a daily basis in a variety of roles. She is a quick learner, coachable and disciplined both on and off the court which will add to the team culture. As a left-handed hitter and setter she can bring some unique talents to the court as well. Coming from a family of Tar Heel Alums we knew Erin's passion for Carolina would be a welcoming addition to our rich traditions."

Wine, Boone and the Tar Heels begin their 2018 season on August 24-25 at Minnesota as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
