An All-Big Ten performer and NCAA Championships competitor while she was a student-athlete on the Penn State University gymnastic team, Emma Sibson joins the University of North Carolina coaching staff as an assistant coach, UNC head coach Derek Galvin announced today.
"I am honored and thrilled to join the Carolina family! I want to thank Derek, Marie and the hiring committee for being so welcoming," said Sibson. "I am excited for the opportunity to work alongside them as well as the entire athletic department at such a prestigious university. I look forward to contributing to the continued tradition of excellence in the classroom, in the community, and on the competition floor! Go Heels!"Â

Capable of coaching all four events, Sibson will serve the Tar Heels as the primary coach on balance beam. She will also assist Associate Head Coach Marie Denick in creating the choreography for this year's floor exercise routines. She will have additional responsibilities with the team's social media platforms as well as in the areas of sports marketing and promotions.
"Emma Sibson will be a wonderful addition to our gymnastics program, and coach Denick and I are very excited to have her join our staff," said Galvin. "I had the opportunity to coach with her at our gymnastics camps this past summer and I was impressed by the way she interacted with the gymnasts. She utilized very effective drills and progressions, and she was well organized in the way she conducted the rotations. I believe she will relate well with our team members while helping them grow as student-athletes."Â
Sibson comes to Carolina after spending a year at NC State during the 2017-2018 competition season. As an assistant coach there, she played a role in preparing the team for their 2018 EAGL Championship season while assisting on balance beam, floor exercise and vault.
Born in Victoria, British Columbia, Sibson began her competitive career at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) in Plano, Texas. She subsequently followed one of her coaches to Zenith Elite Gymnastics Academy, where she continued her Junior Olympic training qualifying for the 2010 VISA Championships as well as the 2011 and 2012 Canadian Championships prior to attending Penn State University. Graduating from Penn State in 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications Arts & Science, Sibson was named a second team All-Big Ten performer in 2015 and was twice named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in 2014.
