September 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's basketball team is scheduled to face 13 opponents this season who competed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.Â
The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2018-19 basketball schedule on Tuesday. UNC's opponents include five non-conference and eight ACC squads who participated in last year's NCAA Tournament. Carolina will face two of those league rivals twice, giving UNC 15 games in the regular season against the 2018 NCAA field.Â
UNC will open its season with a road game for the first time in 19 seasons when Elon opens its brand-new facility on Nov. 6. The last occurrence to begin the season away from home came on Nov. 17, 2000 at Buffalo.
The regular-season home opener is Nov. 9 against Kent State. The Tar Heels also host VCU on Nov. 14 before heading back out on the road for a challenging stretch of five games away from Chapel Hill.
First up is a date with Colorado on Nov. 18 to complete a home-and-home series with the Buffalos. Carolina then plays in the Paradise Jam over the Thanksgiving holiday week with games against UCLA (Nov. 22), USF (Nov. 23) and Kentucky (Nov. 24) in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
The UCLA matchup is the first of four opponents in a five-game stretch against non-conference teams who played in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. That list includes USF in the Paradise Jam, at Ohio State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge (Nov. 29) and a home game with Maine (Dec. 2).
UNC takes its annual trip to Myrtle Beach before Christmas to take on Rice (Dec. 18) and Auburn (Dec. 20) as part of the Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.Â
In the ACC, Carolina has home and away games against Duke and NC State; home games only against Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech, defending-national champion Notre Dame, Virginia and Wake Forest; and away games only against Clemson, Louisville, Miami, Pitt, Syracuse and Virginia Tech.Â
The ACC Tournament is March 6-10 in Greensboro, N.C.
