Carolina Falls to No. 24 Colorado in Straight Sets

BOULDER, Colo. – Despite a career high of nine kills by Katharine Esterley, North Carolina was unable to overcome the 24th-ranked Colorado Buffs on their home court Saturday afternoon for the 3-0 win.
Esterley led Carolina's attack while also posting three blocks. Fellow middle Raleigh Clark and Ava Bell each hit .375 with four and three kills, respectively. Defensively, Greer Moseman and Mia Fradenburg paced the Tar Heels with seven and eight digs each. Colorado's Alexa Smith posted a match-high, 11 kills. Carolina falls to 3-4 on the season while the Buffs improve to 3-3.
An early Hunter Atherton ace gave UNC a 4-3 edge. However, the Buffs' attacked at a .310 clip with only two errors to win the first set, 25-14. Esterley led Carolina's offense with three kills in the frame, but nine attack errors by the Tar Heels hindered first-set success.
A pass from Destiny Cox to Atherton earned Carolina the first point of the set, but Colorado responded with a five-point run to take the lead. The Buffs' Alexa Smith swatted six of 14 kills in the frame for Colorado. A lot block in the second set by Madison Laufenberg and Bell kept UNC in the set, but the home team clinched the win, 25-18.
Colorado's momentum continued in the final set to earn the sweep, 25-20. A pair of late blocks by Esterley with Aristea Tontai and Skylar Wine kept the Tar Heels within three at the 20-17 mark. Annabelle Archer logged an ace late in the frame to keep UNC's hopes alive but the home team took the win, attacking at a .318 clip throughout the match.
UNC concludes the Buffs Invitational 1 p.m. Sunday vs. Georgia. Fans can follow live stats at CUBuffs.com. Carolina returns home to host North Dakota State its final nonconference home match Friday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
