Tar Heels & Blue Devils Battle To Scoreless Tie
October 10, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Carolina has not allowed a goal in ACC play in 470 minutes
DURHAM, N.C. - No. 3 North Carolina and No. 11 Duke battled to a scoreless tie in women's soccer action Thursday night before a crowd of 3,176 fans at Koskinen Stadium.
The Tar Heels outshot the Blue Devils 18-6 in the match but they were unable to get a shot in the back of the net past Duke goalkeeper Brooke Heinsohn who made eight saves in the match.
With the tie, Carolina is now 11-1-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in the ACC. Duke is now 6-1-5 overall and 1-0-4 in the ACC. It shaped up and ended up as a battle of two of the nation's best defenses. Carolina has surrendered only four goals in 13 matches while Duke has only allowed seven goals in 12 matches.
The Tar Heels posted their 11th clean sheet of the season in 13 matches. Carolina has not allowed a goal in five ACC matches this season, a 470-minute scoreless streak for its opponents. The tie did however end a 14-match ACC regular season winning streak for the Tar Heels. Carolina's last blemish in ACC regular season play had come on October 26, 2017 when it battled Notre Dame to a 1-1 tie in Cary, N.C. Carolina's long unbeaten streak in ACC regular season play did continue, however, as UNC is now 25-0-3 in its last 28 conference matches since a 1-0 loss at Notre Dame on October 14, 2016.
Each team had a handful of chances in the first half of play to get on the scoresheet. At 3:21, Duke's Delaney Graham had a breakaway on the left side of the pitch but her shot was saved by UNC starting goalkeeper Marz Josephson who bobbled the ball initially before covering it up. At 21:07, Duke's Marykate McGuire's shot went wide of the right post by about a foot. Carolina then gained some footing in the run of play with Alessia Russo's shot from distance going high at 20:12. Ru Mucherera stole a ball in the offensive third, dribbled into the penalty area and sent a low shot from the left side that was gobbled up by Heinsohn at 13:49. At 10:42, Alexis Strickland had a shot from the top of the box that forced another save by the Blue Devil goalkeeper. Josephson then made her second save of the half at 7:37, nabbing a header in the box by Cosme Caitlin off a free kick from near midfield that went into the box.
Carolina had two good chances early in the second half to seize the lead. At 37:22, a shot from 22 yards out by Rachel Jones was parried over the cross bar by Heinsohn. Just a little over a minute later, Alessia Russo had a shot from the top of the box saved by Heinsohn.
In the first overtime, Bridgette Andrzejewski got off a knuckleball of a shot at 6:08 that handcuffed Heinsohn before she made the save. Then at 3:25, Jones sent a shot on a rope from the left side of the box that just missed the right post.
Duke almost ended the game in the second overtime when Tess Boade got behind the UNC defense and carried the ball into the box before Emily Fox swept in at the last second to knock the ball away for a throw in just as Boade had positioned herself for a one-on-one shot against Tar Heel goalkeeper Claudia Dickey who played the second half and both overtimes.
UNC got off two more shots, one by Russo with 3:29 left and one by Jones with 11 seconds to play. But it was not to be for either side as the match ended in a tie.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a match at Pittsburgh on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ACC Network Extra.
