Tar Heels Improve to 2-0 with Stellar Defensive Effort Against Navy
November 11, 2019 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With four players scoring in double figures and a lockdown defensive effort on the other end of the court, the North Carolina women's basketball team beat visiting Navy 80-40 Monday evening at Carmichael Arena. UNC, which shot 52.7 percent for the game, improved to 2-0. The Midshipmen fell to 2-1.
Senior Taylor Koenen tied her career high with 21 points and junior Janelle Bailey turned in her second double-double in as many games with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Senior guard Madinah Muhammad scored 13 points, including 2-for-3 shooting from three-point range. Freshman Malu Tshitenge scored 11 points and added nine rebounds.
Navy's 40 points marked the fewest by a Tar Heel opponent in almost three years, since UNC held Alabama A&M to 35 points on Nov. 17, 2016.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a home game on Friday against Charleston Southern. Tipoff at Carmichael is 5 p.m.
UNC bolted out of the gate Monday night with 29 first-quarter points on 68.8 percent shooting. Muhammad led the way with 11 points in the first 10 minutes of play, a span during which the Tar Heels held Navy to just nine points.
Carolina didn't let up, continuing to pile up the points while playing gritty defense on the other end. Midway through the second period, Bailey had more points (14) than the entire Navy team (13). The Tar Heels led 48-19 at halftime.
The lead continued to grow in the second half, even as the Tar Heel bench got quality minutes. A three-pointer by junior Leah Church 53 seconds into the fourth quarter gave UNC its largest advantage of the night, 47 (72-25).
Eleven players saw time for the Tar Heels, with only Tshitenge playing more than 30 minutes. Koenen's 21 came in 26 minutes of play, and Bailey's 20 came in 27 minutes.
