UNC fenced its first dual meets of the season Saturday at the Elite Invitational, coming away with positive results and valuable experience.
Both the men's and women's fencing squads finished 2-3, each picking up a marquee win, with the women beating host Penn and the men beating Ohio State. The Tar Heel women also beat Air Force, while the men beat Johns Hopkins.
"We had some hard-fought wins and some very tough losses today," UNC coach Matt Jednak said. "Both of these will help us as the season progresses. I'm proud of the showing and the growth we've seen so far. We learned a lot about ourselves and took home ideas for our next stage of growth."
Among notable individual performances on Saturday, sophomore Beni Rabinowitz went 10-2 in men's sabre, including 3-0 marks against NJIT and Johns Hopkins. Freshman Connor Head was 7-3 in men's foil, 3-0 against Ohio State. Sophomore Lucas Fernandez was 6-1 in men's foil, including 3-0 against Johns Hopkins. And junior Andrew Fulmer led the way in men's epee with a 6-5 mark, going 3-0 vs Johns Hopkins.
