November 18, 2019 | Football
GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina football standouts Sam Howell and Dazz Newsome have been recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference for their performances last weekend at Pitt. Howell earns his fifth ACC Rookie of the Week honor, while Newsome set multiple career highs to earn the league's Receiver of the Week honors.Â
ROOKIE – Sam Howell, North Carolina, Fr., QB, Indian Trail, N.C.
The five-time ACC Rookie of the Week tossed three touchdown passes to give him 29 for the season, the third most in ACC history by a freshman QB. Only FSU's Jameis Winston (40, 2013) and Clemson's Trevor Lawrence (30, 2018) had more in a single season. He threw for 322 yards to move past T.J. Yates for the most passing yards by a Carolina freshman QB with 2,794 yards. Howell and Ohio State's Justin Fields are the only two FBS quarterbacks to have thrown multiple touchdown passes in 10 consecutive games.
RECEIVER – Dazz Newsome, North Carolina, Jr., WR, Hampton, Va.
Registered career highs with 11 catches and 170 receiving yards and also scored his seventh TD of the season. The 11 catches are the most by a Tar Heel receiver since Ryan Switzer had 13 against NC State in 2016. Newsome has now gone over 100 receiving yards in three of his last four games.
Carolina hosts Mercer this Saturday on Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.
