Carolina Takes on In-State Foes, Duke, Wake Forest

CHAPEL HILL – Winning four of the past five matches, North Carolina travels to Duke Thursday and Wake Forest Sunday to face the remaining two ACC teams for the first time this season.
The Tar Heels travel eight miles down the road to Cameron Indoor Stadium, taking on Duke at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night. Fans unable to attend can watch the match on ACCNX. Sunday, Carolina heads to Wake Forest for a 1 p.m. first serve in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Recently for the Tar Heels (11-11, 8-4 ACC)
Out-blocking 10 of 12 conference opponents, The Tar Heels lead the ACC with 238.5 total blocks while both Aristea Tontai and Skyy Howard rank top-10 in the ACC in blocks per set. Lauren Harrison leads Carolina with 254 kills.
Despite three Tar Heels with double-digit kills, the Tar Heels dropped a five set match to Georgia Tech Friday night in Carmichael Arena. After winning the first set and battling through 35 tie scores and 16 lead changes throughout the match, UNC came back from its biggest deficit in the third set, down 10-19. However, the Tar Heels were unable to complete the comeback, falling in the fifth, 11-15. Carolina handed the Yellow Jackets their first set loss since Oct. 6.
Bouncing back from Friday, North Carolina swept Clemson on Sunday, limiting the Tigers to a .018 hitting percentage thanks to 15 blocks. Helping the Tar Heels to their third Sunday sweep, Destiny Cox led UNC with a match-best 11 kills while Skyy Howard tacked on six as well as contributing to eight of the 15 total blocks.
About Duke (11-14, 4-8 ACC)
Series: UNC leads, 60-56 (UNC won, 3-2 on Nov. 17, 2018 in Durham, N.C.)
Winning three of their past four matches, the Blue Devils return home for a trio of matches in Cameron Indoor. Sophomore outside hitter Ade Owokoniran leads Duke with 258 kills, averaging 3.49 kills per set. Sophomore middle blocker Lilly Cooper ranks third in the ACC and 66th nationally with 98 total blocks.
About Wake Forest (11-12, 1-11 ACC)
Series: UNC leads, 51-17 (UNC won, 3-0 on Nov. 4, 2018 in Chapel Hill, N.C.)
After beginning the season 10-1 in non-conference play, Wake Forest's lone ACC win came Oct. 4 with a 3-1 victory at Syracuse. Looking for their second league win, the Demon Deacons return home for four-straight matches in Reynolds Gymnasium. Freshman Peyton Suess leads WF with 256 kills, averaging 3.24 K/S.
