Cole Anthony, Leaky Black Out with Injuries; Sterling Manley Undergoes Surgery
December 15, 2019 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina men's basketball team will be without guards Cole Anthony and Leaky Black for Sunday's game at Carmichael Arena versus Wofford.
Anthony, Carolina's leading scorer and the second-leading scorer among freshmen in the nation at 19.1 points per game, is out indefinitely due to a right knee injury. Treatment plans will be evaluated and determined in next few days.
Black, a sophomore who has started every game at small forward and has been Carolina's top backup at the point, has a sprained right foot that limited his performance in the last four games. He is out on a game-to-game basis.
Also, junior forward Sterling Manley had surgery on Dec. 12 to repair cartilage in his left knee. He will not return this season. There is no timetable for his return to basketball activities. He averaged 5.4 points and 3.6 rebounds as a freshman in 2017-18, including 10 rebounds in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but missed 16 games last season due to soreness in his knee.
K.J. Smith, a junior who is in his second season with the Tar Heels after transferring from Pacific, where he played in 2016-17, is expected to start at the point against Wofford. Smith has played 22 minutes in eight games this season. He came to UNC as a walk-on, but earned a scholarship prior to this season.
