Post-Game Quotes
North Carolina Head Coach Roy Williams
Opening Statement
"There's not a lot to say. I've had my butt beat before and it'll be beat again and I'll live to face another day. Their team was better than our team; their coach was a lot better than our coach. Simple little things that we work on I didn't get them to do during the course of the game. We did have struggles shooting the ball in the hole, but their defense had a lot to do with that. At halftime, you're down two and felt like you played terribly in the first half – outrebounded by nine and shooting 28 percent. Felt like I had stolen something and needless to say it got worse. We just made so many mistakes, so many fundamental mistakes — you can't let the guy run past you and lay it up on the other end. We had two occasions tonight where they laid it up because we didn't have defensive balance. I usually go an entire season and not have two of those. Cole [Anthony] tried awfully hard. He's sick, his temperature last night and this morning. Head basketball coach at North Carolina did a sorry job tonight. I looked up in the stands and saw people leaving with four, five, six minutes left in the game and I didn't blame them. I wasn't mad at them — we didn't do what we should do to try to provide a little more toughness."
On what went wrong after cutting the lead to three at 39-36
"We turned it over a couple of times during that stretch, but I can pick on everything. We said we were going to switch every screen on the ball; first possession we didn't do it with a veteran lineup in there. Seems like we even had the ball and I think they missed the first possession… After Cole's second three, that got it to three [points]. As evident from the game, I have no answers."
On the impact of Armando Bacot's injury
"We can't feel sorry for ourselves. It's part of the game. [Armando Bacot] was great against Oregon and it would have been nice to have him and as I said Cole [Anthony] is under the weather too… Those are just excuses. It would have been good to have everybody, but just because you have adversity doesn't mean that you go belly up on the simplest things like denying one pass away."
On whether he has ever felt so thin in the post
"I've never felt so sorry as I feel right now. Whether it's in the post or whatever I've got no answers. It's a frustrating feeling. Call a play and guys can't even remember — that's blaming them and I'm not blaming them; it was bad coaching."
On the decision to put the reserves into the game
"If you were watching us play, what were those guys doing that were in the game? It's a pretty easy thing; if you suck out there somebody should come in for you."
On if there was a message to the reserve players
"No. Seriously, if they didn't have a message by looking at the scoreboard—I put those five guys in there because I didn't like the guys that were playing. If Andrew [Platek] makes his two free throws, if B-Rob [Brandon Robinson] makes two, all of a sudden it's a two-point game. We take two charges, drive the ball to the basket instead of settling for a three-point shot. It wasn't to send a message. I just didn't like what those guys were doing."
On the status of Amando Bacot
"It's a sprained ankle. It was swollen by the time they got to the locker room so my guess is he will be out for a while."
North Carolina Players
Garrison Brooks, Junior Forward
On the disconnect in the game
"There was a disconnect on offense, for sure. Not playing how we were coached to play, I think that was the biggest thing. We didn't play how we were supposed to. We were just going through the motions."
On things that they usually do to get back into the game
"Normally we get the ball moving and get a great shot. K.J. [Smith] did a really good job of moving the ball and getting everybody involved."
On Armando Bacot leaving the game
"That's huge. That's the guy that averages 12-and-10, so you are missing a double-double on the court. I believe we missed a big part of us today with Armando [Bacot] out."
On his personal feelings about watching Armando Bacot go out
"It bothers me a little bit because I see how hard they've got to work. It's tough when your friends go down, so I'm going to pray for him."
Brandon Robinson, Senior Guard
On the point at which the game got away from them
"We didn't get any stop; we didn't pay attention to detail; we didn't take the things Coach [Roy Williams] was telling us in the timeouts out to the court."
What it means when Roy Williams says he's got no answers
"We've got to play better and we've got to be more accountable. It's not Coach's [Roy Williams] fault; it's our fault. We were the ones out there playing, so we've just got to be better. I'll take the blame for that. I've just got to be better; I can't play like that and expect us to get wins."
On where Armando Bacot was missed the most tonight
"[Armando Bacot] definitely would have helped us inside a lot. He played good for us while he was in there, so we definitely missed him. But as Coach [Roy Williams] always says, if somebody gets hurt, North Carolina is still going to play. They're not going to stop the game. Everybody needs to step up with Armando down."
On the atmosphere in the locker room after the game
"Coach [Roy Williams] can tell us to go out there and do everything, but we've got to go out there and execute and we didn't execute tonight."
Justin Pierce, Graduate Forward
On what Roy Williams means when he says he has no answers
"It's on us. We've got to play a lot better. We've got to come out with more of a fire. Coach [Roy Williams] is one of the best to ever do it. They talk about it all the time. They're coaching us, they know how to be successful, they've won National Championships and we're not doing what we're asked to do right now. That's why I think he's struggling with that a lot. We've just got to get a lot better in all phases of the game. We can't let teams go on runs like that, otherwise we're going to get exposed."
On what Armando being out means for the big men on the team
"I feel bad for Armando [Bacot], first of all. He's a great kid. He was really turning a corner for us and he's a huge part of our team. No one can replace that; no one person can replace that. Obviously, I'm going to have to step up and play a bigger role, but I know I'm not the same player as Armando in terms of what I bring to the table, so we're going to be a little different look. The biggest thing right now is I'm praying for the kid to get healthy. It's just tough. We have a lot of injuries right now and it's just really hard because you play the game, you love the game and to have it taken from you like that. For me to watch guys go through that pain emotionally and physically is really hard as a teammate."
