Tar Heels Make Short Trip To Duke Meets
February 8, 2019 | Fencing
The UNC men's and women's fencing teams will compete Saturday and Sunday in the closest they have to a home event this season, the Duke Meets in Durham, N.C. The men's competition runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and the women fence in the same span on Sunday. All competition takes place in Card Gym and there is no charge for admission.
Â
"This weekend will be a good test of our ability to perform at or above expectations," UNC coach Ron Miller said. "There are no easy opponents. We must continue to compete with the same courage and energy that has brought us to this point of our season."Â
Â
Heading into the weekend the Tar Heel men are 20-12 and the Tar Heel women are 22-13. Both were among teams also receiving votes in the latest CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll, which includes the top 10 teams. The UNC men are second among teams also receiving votes and the women are sixth.
Â
On Saturday, UNC opens against Johns Hopkins and Air Force before meeting sixth-ranked Duke at 11 a.m. The Tar Heels face No. 4 Penn State at 1:30 p.m. before closing with Boston College at 3. Like UNC, Air Force and BC are also receiving votes in the top-10 poll.
Â
On Sunday the women will face an even more challenging field, taking on three ranked teams – No. 2 Northwestern, No. 4 Penn State and No. 6 Duke – and two others that are also receiving votes in Air Force and Boston College. UNC opens with Northwestern at 8 a.m. and meets Duke at 11.
Â
"We are looking forward to closing out our regular season with strong and competitive performances."
