Heels Offense Powers Past Gardner-Webb, 18-8
March 12, 2019 | Baseball
The starting six-through-nine hitters in the Carolina lineup combined for 12 hits, 8 RBI and scored 11 of the team's 18 runs on the afternoon. That includes Danny Serretti, who went 5-5 with two RBI, three doubles and a pair of runs scored and Jackson Hestlerlee went 2-4 with a home run and four runs scored.
Eight different pitchers saw action for UNC including freshman Josh Dotson, who tossed an inning and two thirds of scoreless ball and picked up the win, the first in his college career.
Key Moments
- Carolina struck first courtesy of an Aaron Sabato RBI. With runners on second and third, the freshman sent a shot to left to plate Michael Busch for the first run of the game. Ike Freeman tried to round from second and score, but a perfect throw from the left fielder nabbed him, ending the early threat.
- Jackson Hesterlee hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the second inning, his second of the year. That extended the UNC lead to 2-0.
- Gardner-Webb put three runs on the board in the top of the third when Corey Howard lined a three-run double down the right field line against Tar Heel starter Will Sandy. It cleared the bases, giving the visitors a 3-2 lead.
- Carolina answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs of their own. Danny Serretti plated two with a double, while Brandon Martorano singled in another, making it 5-3.
- Gardner-Webb's Langdon Wilson was able to end the threat in the bottom of the fourth inning, striking out Freeman, Caleb Roberts and Sabato consecutively to strand the bases loaded.
- After the visitors tied the game at five in the top of the fifth, Carolina used the bottom half to score seven runs. Led by Ike Freeman's three-RBI double to left, the Tar Heels jumped out to a 12-5 lead after five full innings.
- The bottom of the seventh inning saw three more UNC runs cross the dish, with RBIs from Ashton McGee, Serretti and Martorano. That boosted the score to 16-8.
- Hansen Butler worked a one-two-three top of the ninth, clinching the win for the Tar Heels.
