No. 8 North Carolina Downs UNCW, 11-4
March 13, 2019 | Baseball
Connor Ollio picked up his first collegiate win in his young Tar Heel career after throwing 1.2 innings and giving up no runs while striking out two Seahawks.
Key Moments:
- The Tar Heels scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 early in Wilmington. All four RBI were from freshman as Aaron Sabato brought home one with a bases loaded single, Caleb Roberts brought home two with a bases loaded single and Danny Serretti recorded the final RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field.
- UNCW cut the lead in half in the second inning after a RBI triple to left field and a sacrifice fly to bring the runner home from third as the Heels led 4-2.
- A two out, two-run home run from UNCW tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the third inning.
- With one out, UNCW tried to execute a hit and run but a diving catch by Caleb Roberts in right field was good for the second out and then he fired a rope to first base for the double play to get out of the inning.
- Ike Freeman led off the seventh inning with a big triple and ended up giving the Heels a 5-4 lead on the very next pitch after a wild pitch went to the backstop.
- With two outs and runners on first and third in the bottom of the seventh, UNCW smoked a ball to the left side of the infield and Freeman snagged it out of midair with a full extension backhand to keep the 5-4 lead.
- In the 8th inning, Brandon Martorano laced a double to left field to move Ashton McGee to third base with one out as the Heels looked to add insurance runs to their 5-4 lead.
- Freeman came through again in the 8th inning with a double to right field to score McGee and Martorano and give the Heels a 7-4 lead.
- Martorano blew the game open with a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Heels a 11-4 lead.
Notables:
- Dylan Harris extends his career best, and team best, reached base streak to 14 consecutive games.
- Ike Freeman hit his first triple of the season and the second of his career Wednesday night in Wilmington.
- Caleb Roberts picked up his second career three-hit game as a Tar Heel.
- Serretti extended his hitting streak to four consecutive games and his on base streak to nine straight, both career highs.
