Tar Heels Open Outdoor Season at Georgia Tech
March 14, 2019 | Track & Field
ATLANTA, Ga. - The North Carolina track and field program kicks off the 2019 outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational on the George C. Griffin Track.
"We're anxious to get started outside," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "Georgia Tech has a great facility and we may get a little bit of rain this weekend, but that's the joy of outdoor track. The individuals who haven't had a chance to compete yet — discus throwers, javelin throwers, 400- and 110-meter hurdlers — all those student-athletes are anxious to get their seasons going. I think we have a good group down here. I'm excited to see some athletes compete for the first time this year and to watch our returners build upon the indoor season."
The two-day meet will feature 219 schools, including Alabama A&M, Clemson, Dartmouth, Eastern Michigan, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, High Point, IUPUI, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Louisville, Marshall, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.
The Yellow Jacket Invitational gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. with Alex Cooke beginning her final outdoor campaign in the women's hammer throw. Cooke will be the Tar Heels' only competitor between the two events — hammer throw and 5,000 meters — on Friday.
The meet will resume Saturday with the men's shot put, women's javelin and men's pole vault at 11 a.m. while the running events start at 12:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay. In the field events, The Tar Heels will have individuals representing in the javelin, pole vault, high jump, discus, women's long jump, men's triple jump and women's hammer throw. Nicole Greene, the 2018 NCAA champion in the women's indoor high jump, is expected to make her return debut after redshirting the 2018 outdoor and 2019 indoor seasons.
Then on the track, Carolina athletes will compete in both sections of the 4x100, the women's 200 meters, the men's 100 meters, the men's 800 meters and both sections of the 4x400.
