Tar Heels Edge Florida, 11-9

GAINESVILLE, FLA. –Third-ranked North Carolina (7-1) went on a 9-1 run to take an early lead, then withstood a late rally and picked up an 11-9 win over No. 16 Florida (3-5) on Saturday at Dizney Stadium.
After the Gators took a 3-2 lead with 12:11 remaining in the first half, Carolina ended the half with a 6-1 run and started the second with three consecutive goals for an 11-4 lead.
Florida responded with five straight goals to cut the UNC advantage to as few as two goals before the Tar Heels were finally able to keep possession away from the Gators in the closing minutes.
Florida native Olivia Ferrucci had perhaps the best game of her career, with three goals and two assists, tying her career highs in both categories and posting her third hat trick of the season.
Kara Klages had two goals and one assist, while Tayler Warehime scored twice and Katie Hoeg had one goal and one assist. Jamie Ortega, Taylor McDaniels and Giana Bowe each scored once.
For Florida, Shannon Kavanagh had three goals and one assist, Lindsey Ronbeck had two goals and two assists and Grace Haus had two goals and an assist.
Taylor Moreno (7-1) posted another strong game in goal for Carolina, making seven saves. Haley Hicklen made 11 saves for Florida but fell to 3-5 on the year in the cage.

• The Carolina defense held Florida to just one goal for a stretch of over 24 minutes that spanned portions of both halves.
• Carolina has won four consecutive games with three of those wins coming against ranked opponents in the IWLCA poll (No. 5 Northwestern, No. 6 Virginia and No. 16 Florida).
• The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with Florida, 8-3, including 3-1 in Gainesville.
• UNC is 7-1 overall this season and 4-1 against opponents ranked in the top 10 of the IWLCA poll. Carolina has beaten No. 4 James Madison, No. 5 Northwestern, No. 6 Virginia and No. 16 Florida while losing at No. 2 Maryland.
