March 19, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL --- Jamie Ortega had a six-minute hat trick to start the contest among her game-high four goals as No. 3 North Carolina topped visiting Campbell 16-5 Tuesday afternoon at the UNC Lacrosse-Soccer Stadium. Katie Hoeg added a hat trick of her own as well as a game-high four assists for the Tar Heels, who led 13-2 at halftime and improved to 8-1 on the year.
"It's nice to play against different competition that presents different challenges," head coach Jenny Levy said after the game. "It's great to be in the new facility. Campbell is on top of their division in their conference, and we try to play teams that have their own confidence and swagger and sense of self, and they definitely did today. It was great for us to play against someone that had that fortitude."
Ortega opened the scoring with an unassisted goal before Taylor McDaniels made it 2-0 less than a minute later. Ortega then scored twice in just 17 seconds to secure her seventh hat trick of the season and double the Carolina lead to 4-0.
The Tar Heels answered the first Campbell (3-5) goal with four more, as Kara Klages, Ida Farinholt and Tayler Warehime found the net in addition to Ortega. Another Klages goal made it 9-2 at the 12:43 mark before Hoeg scored a pair. The second was an incredible fast break goal, as the Tar Heels went the length of the field after a Campbell shot with Ally Mastroianni finding Hoeg just outside the crease to finish the attack.
Taylor McDaniels and Olivia Ferrucci added goals before the break, and Hoeg completed her third hat trick of the year six minutes into the second half. Amanda Dionne and Amanda Fedor capped the scoring for Carolina, which saw all of its available players see the field.
Goalkeepers Taylor Moreno and Elise Hennessey split time, with Moreno picking up five saves and Hennessey adding one.
Ellie Allen and Melissa Placek had two goals each to pace Campbell.
Carolina returns to action on Saturday when the Tar Heels host No. 1 Boston College at noon.
