Timmy Kelly matches career high with four goals
COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The fourth-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team built an eight-goal halftime lead and went on to beat 16th-ranked North Carolina 16-9 before 3,757 fans at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Terrapins improved to 8-1 on the season with the victory while the Tar Heels saw their three-goal winning streak come to an end and fell to 6-3. Next up for the Tar Heels will be their ACC opener against second-ranked Duke next Saturday at 2 p.m. at the new UNC Lacrosse Stadium on the Chapel Hill campus.
Timmy Kelly led the Tar Heels with a four goal day. That matched his career high for goals in a game which he initially set against Johns Hopkins on February 23, 2018. Alex Trippi had a pair of goals for the Tar Heels while Andy Matthews had a goal and two assists. Nicky Solomon had a goal and an assist for Carolina and Jacob Kelly had a goal. Solomon ran his scoring streak to nine straight games as he has scored in each game of his freshman season. Timmy Kelly has now posted 14 points in the last four games for Carolina.
Logan Wisnauskas had a career high eight points for Maryland on four goals and four assists. Anthony DeMaio had a career high four goals for the Terps. Jared Bernhardt and Louis Dubick each had hat tricks for Maryland while Bubba Fairman had three assists.
Maryland outshot the Tar Heels 38-33 in the game and scooped up one more ground ball than UNC 24-23. Maryland dominated possession in the game, winning 22 of 29 face-offs with Austin Henningsen winning 22 of 26 face-offs as UNC tried four different players at the face-off X. Danny Dolan made 12 saves in the game for the Terrapins while Alex Bassil had seven saves for the Tar Heels.
UNC did force 19 turnovers by the Terps, including three failed clears. UNC had only 10 turnovers. Maryland capitalized twice on extra-man opportunities in six attempts while UNC was 0-for-2 in EMO opportunities.
After Timmy Kelly opened the scoring for UNC 1:16 into the match, the Terps scored eight of the next nine goals to go up 8-2 with 10:18 left in the half. That including five goals in a span from eight seconds left in the opening period to 10:18 left in the second frame. Alex Trippi stopped the scoring run, scoring with 5:58 left in the half but the Terps ran off three more goals to lead 11-3 at intermission.

Carolina opened the final period with goals by Timmy Kelly, assisted by Andy Matthews, by Nicky Solomon and by Andy Matthews. The latter goal cut Maryland's lead to 15-9 with 12:03 left in the game but the Tar Heels were unable to cut further into the lead and Anthony DeMaio's fourth goal of the game with 2:34 to play finished off the scoring.
