Tar Heels Start Strong But Fall At No. 3 Wake

The North Carolina men's tennis team won the doubles point and claimed the first singles decision to gain an early 2-0 lead over third-ranked Wake Forest but ultimately fell 5-2 Wednesday in Atlantic Coast Conference action. The host Demon Deacons improved to 22-3 (8-0 ACC) while UNC fell to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in ACC play.
The Tar Heels return to action on Sunday, hosting No. 26 Florida State for a 1 p.m. ACC matchup at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Against Wake, Carolina started strong in doubles, picking up the first match to finish when junior Simon Soendergaard and sophomore Mac Kiger won 6-2 on Court 3. Wake took Court 2, putting all eyes on Court 1 where UNC senior Blaine Boyden and junior William Blumberg beat Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjilev 6-4 to claim the point for the Tar Heels.
UNC went up 2-0 when Kiger sped to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Siddhant Banthia on Court 6.
After that, the home team took every remaining singles match. On Court 2, third-ranked Petros Chrysochos beat UNC sophomore Benjamin Sigouin, ranked # 37, 6-4, 6-2.
The Demon Deacons also won in straight sets on Court 5, where Rrezart Cungu beat junior Josh Peck 7-5, 6-3, to tie the team score at 2-2.
UNC won first sets on Courts 1 and 3, but Wake took the second sets on both. On Court 1, Blumberg won the first set 6-2 but WFU's Gojo took the second and third by 6-3 scores to give the Demon Deacons a 3-2 team lead. On Court 3, freshman Brian Cernoch won the first 6-4 but fell in the second by the same margin. In the third set, #22 Bar Botzer beat #110 Cernoch 6-3 to clinch the win for Wake.
The teams played out the match on Court 4, even though the win had been decided. Wake's Melios Efstathiou, ranked #79, won the first set in a tiebreaker, but Boyden bounced back to take the second 6-3. In the third, Wake won 6-4 to close out the match.
