Wiltrout Tops 16-Year-Old UNC Javelin Record
April 12, 2019 | Track & Field
CORAL GABLES, Fla. / GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Madison Wiltrout jumped to the top of UNC's record books on Friday after breaking a 16-year-old javelin record at Miami's Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Wiltrout's collegiate-best mark of 181-4 (55.28 meters) bested the previous school record by over five feet.
"Madison continues to impress us with her performances in competition," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "Last week, she fell out of the NCAA top 10, but hopefully this will put her right back up in that top list of athletes. For Madison to already break a long-standing school record as just a redshirt freshman is really quite an accomplishment."
Wiltrout, a redshirt freshman from Connellsville, Pa., has thrown over 170 feet three times this season and has now won four of her five javelin competitions.
Her performance ranks second in the ACC by a mere four inches, fourth in the East Region and sixth in the NCAA.
"We're really off to a great start down here at the University of Miami," Meaders said. "The weather is perfect for track and field and the javelin throwers performed extremely well today. I think everybody either hit a season best or threw right around their lifetime bests. Coach Gorski has done a great job preparing them for the championship part of the season and our student-athletes are becoming more consistent in the throws which is a really good sign."
