Tar Heels Blank No. 21 Virginia Tech for Seventh Top-25 Win

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Behind Brittany Pickett's fifth complete-game shutout, North Carolina upset No. 21 Virginia Tech, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon to being the ACC Coastal Series in Blacksburg, Virginia.

After three scoreless innings, Lexi Godwin plated the only run Carolina would need with an RBI-single. The Tar Heels tacked on two more unearned insurance runs in the fifth thank to heads up base-running by Leah Murray and Kiani Ramsey. Virginia Tech scattered three hits throughout the first four innings, but Carolina's defense and a complete-game shutout by Pickett stranded the base runners for the 3-0 win.

The win marks Carolina's seventh ranked win of 2019 – the most ranked wins in a single season in program history. Carolina and Virginia Tech will play for the series with a doubleheader Sunday at noon. The Tar Heels improve to 28-14 on the season, 14-5 in conference while Tech drops to 39-7, 16-3 in ACC play.

» After a pair of strikeouts to begin the first, Tech's best chance to score came in the first inning on Caitlyn Nolan's two-out double. However, the Tar Heels' defense kept the Hokies from home.
