April 25, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four-time reigning league champion North Carolina placed four players on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Team, while Cameron Morra was named the league's freshman of the year, as voted on by the ACC's head coaches.
Juniors Makenna Jones and Alexa Graham were honored on the first team, while junior Sara Daavettila and Morra landed on the second team.Â
Morra, from Rockville, Maryland, is the third Tar Heel to earn freshman of the year honors, joining Hayley Carter (2014) and Daavettila (2017). The 2019 ACC Championship Most Valuable Player has been a steady force for No. 1 UNC in her rookie season. Morra is 19-2 in duals this spring and ranked No. 45 nationally in singles. She is also half of the 13th ranked doubles team with Jones that owns a 20-3 record.
Jones (Greenville, S.C.) garners first team honors for the second year in a row behind a stellar third campaign in Chapel Hill. She is No. 5 nationally in singles behind an impressive 8-3 record against top-25 ranked opponents and 24-8 overall.
Graham, who hails from Garden City, New York, has undoubtably enjoyed one of the finest seasons in the conference, losing only once the entire spring in both singles and doubles. She is 32-4 overall and ranked No. 7 nationally in singles, while Graham is also 10-2 against top-50 opponents and her 21 dual wins are third most in the ACC.Â
Graham and doubles teammate senior Jessie Aney are No. 5 in the country thanks to their dominating play that has seen the duo record a 20-1 mark this dual season, featuring a 19-1 record at No. 1 doubles.
Daavettila, from Williamston, Michigan, grabs ACC honors for a third successive campaign. She was listed on the first team and voted the freshman of the year in 2017, and earned third team honors in 2018. Daavettila is ranked No. 18 nationally in singles primarily due to her 24-7 record.
Carolina (29-1) is riding a 20-match winning streak into the NCAA Team Championship. The selection show will air Monday, April 29th at 6:30 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. The Tar Heels expect to be selected as a host for the NCAA Regionals on May 4-5 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
