Five Fencers Earn All-ACC Academic Honors
May 2, 2019 | Fencing, Academics
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five UNC fencers have been selected for All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic honors, as announced Thursday by the ACC. Senior Matthew Garrelick, juniors Wei Chee Chen and Jackie Litynski, and freshmen Daniel Mogilevsky and Beni Rabinowitz earned the recognition, which is based on academic and athletic performance.
It's the third year in a row that Litynski has earned the honor, and the second time for Garrelick after he was honored as a freshman in 2016. Chen, Mogilevsky and Rabinowitz were honored for the first time.
Chen, Litynski and Rabinowitz all represented UNC at the 2019 NCAA Championships as the Tar Heels had their largest group at the championships since 2013.
Chen is from Birmingham, Ala., and is majoring in business administration. She placed 9th in women's foil at both ACC Championships and NCAA Regionals, and 23rd at NCAA Championships.
Garrelick is from Cedar Grove, N.J., and finishing up his degree in statistics and analytics, with graduation just over a week away. He was the silver medalist in men's sabre at ACC Championships and placed 10th at NCAA Regionals.
Litynski is from Niskayuna, N.Y., and is working toward a double major in public policy and environmental studies. She won the silver medal in women's sabre at 2019 ACC Championships then placed fifth at NCAA Regionals and 24th at NCAA Championships.
Mogilevsky is a freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., and is majoring in business administration. He placed ninth in men's sabre at ACC Championships and 21st at NCAA Regionals.
Rabinowitz is a redshirt freshman from Charlotte, N.C., and is majoring in economics. He placed 13th in men's sabre at NCAA Championships, just one spot shy of All-America honors. He also was seventh at ACC Championships and third at NCAA Regionals.
Notre Dame's Axel Kiefer and Amanda Sirico were selected as the ACC Men's and Women's Fencing Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
