June 4, 2019 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina junior Austin Bergner was selected on the second day of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers. The right-handed pitcher was taken in the 9th round with the 262nd pick overall. He is the third Tar Heel to be selected in this year's MLB Draft, joining teammates Michael Busch and Tyler Baum who were selected on day one.
Bergner is currently in his third year as an impact arm for Carolina. After posting back-to-back strong seasons in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heel is again proving to be a regular option on the hill for head coach Mike Fox. This year, Bergner is 6-1 with a 5.21 ERA. He has struck out 72 batters in 77.2 innings of work.
The Windermere, Florida native was dominant in his last start against Tennessee, which won Carolina the Super Regional. He tossed seven innings of two-run ball, striking out eight and allowing just four hits.
In his career, Bergner has pitched 208.1 innings in Carolina Blue, striking out 201 batters and allowing 198 hits. He is 17-6 with a 4.31 ERA.
