Junkkari Leads Tar Heels at Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The North Carolina women's golf team wrapped up competition at the Cougar Classic on Tuesday afternoon at the Yeamans Hall Club. The team finished ninth overall, with the team's lowest round of 284 coming on the first day. Over the course of three rounds, the Tar Heels accumulated a total team score of 867 (284-291-292).

Freshman Krista Junkkari led the Tar Heels with a 3-under-par tournament performance, and carded an even-par 72 in the final round. Junkkari tied for 12th place with a total score of 213 (70-71-72).

Sophomore Jennifer Zhou was Carolina's second-best performer at the Cougar Classic. Zhou recorded the Tar Heels lowest single-round score of the tournament, a 3-under-par 69, in the opening 18 holes. She would go to score a 3-over-par 75 in round two and 2-over-par 74 in the third round. Her total tournament score of 218 (+2) placed her in a tie for 34th out of 93 competing golfers.

Junior Ava Bergner played consistently throughout the tournament and carded three straight rounds of 2-over-par 74 (+2). The Ketsch, Germany, native tied for 54th with a total stroke count of 222 (+6).

Sophomore Nicole Lu bounced back from her second-round struggles and shot an even-par 72 on the final day of the Cougar Classic. Lu finished the event tied for 64th at 8-over-par with a 224 (71-81-72). Notably, Lu recorded 13 birdies over the course of the tournament, which was the fifth most by any gofer.

Senior Brynn Walker concluded her play on Tuesday with rounds of 74-71-80 to finish tied for 69th with a total tournament score of 225 (+9).
