TAR HEELS AND DEMON DEACONS
• Fellow ACC members North Carolina and Wake Forest hook up in a non-league tussle on Friday, Sept. 13 before a nationally-televised audience on ESPN for a 6 p.m. ET kick off.
• The game marks the first Friday contest for Carolina since Nov. 25, 2016 against NC State.
• The Tar Heels hold a 20-14 advantage in Winston-Salem, however, the Demon Deacons have won the last two encounters in 2007 and 2012, including a one-point victory in '12.Â
• Prior to the two setbacks on the road, the Tar Heels enjoyed a 7-1 stretch at Wake Forest between 1990-2004.
• The two in-state rivals met every season between 1919 and 2004 (minus 1943) until ACC expansion took hold in the mid-2000's.Â
• The trip to Winston-Salem will mark the first non-league showdown with the Demon Deacons since Wake joined the Southern Conference prior to the 1936 season.
• In the most recent meeting, Marquise Williams threw three TD passes to Mack Hollins and also rushed for a score in a 50-14 rout of Wake on Oct. 18, 2015 at Kenan Stadium.
• A win would give Carolina back-to-back victories in the series for the first time since 2003-04.
BROWN VS. WAKE FOREST
• Mack Brown went 8-2 against Wake Forest as head coach at UNC between 1988-97. The Heels dropped the initial two games, before Brown's men ran off the next eight in the series.
• Brown defeated Wake, 27-25, in his first game as head coach back in 1983 at the helm of Appalachian State. The game was played in Winston-Salem.
NEXT UP
• Carolina hosts Appalachian State on Saturday, Sept. 21 in just the second all-time meeting between the two in-state schools. The Tar Heels earned a 56-16 home win over the Mountaineers in the season opener of the 1940 season. Coincidentally, that game also was played on Sept. 21.Â
• Mack Brown was the Appalachian State head coach in 1983 and Senior Advisor to the Head Coach Sparky Woods served as head coach from 1984-88 in Boone after serving on Brown's staff in '83.Â
