TAR HEELS AND MOUNTAINEERS
• Carolina hosts Appalachian State on Sept. 21 in just the second all-time meeting between the two in-state schools. The Tar Heels earned a 56-16 home win over the Mountaineers in the season opener of the 1940 season. Coincidentally, that game also was played on Sept. 21.Â
• Mack Brown was the Appalachian State head coach in 1983 and Senior Advisor to the Head Coach Sparky Woods served as head coach from 1984-88 in Boone after serving on Brown's staff in '83.
BROWN VS. APPALACHIAN STATE
• For the second time in the last three weeks, UNC head coach Mack Brown will face an opponent for the first time when the Tar Heels take on Appalachian State.
• Two weeks earlier, Brown met the University of Miami for the first time.
SUN BELT HISTORY
• UNC's only previous game against a current Sun Belt member was Georgia Southern in 2009, a 42-12 win when the Eagles were still with the Southern Conference.
CAROLINA FAMILY WEEKEND
• In conjunction with the Appalachian State game, UNC is hosting Carolina Family Weekend 2019 Sept. 20-22. Family weekend is a perfect time to reconnect with their students, meet other Carolina families, and connect with faculty and staff.Â
NEXT UP
• UNC hosts reigning CFP National Champion Clemson on Sept. 28. The ACC rivals last met in the 2015 ACC Championship that went to the Tigers by a 45-37 margin.Â
• Clemson will be the first consensus reigning champs ever to visit Kenan, and the first national champion of any kind to come to Chapel Hill since Tennessee in 1951.Â
• Clemson last visited Chapel Hill in 2010, a 21-16 Tar Heel victory.
