North Carolina sophomore James Mulligan has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Fencer of the Week following his performance at Sunday's Penn State Invitational.
Mulligan, a foil fencer from Santa Cruz, Calif., went 5-4 against a tough field including a 3-0 performance against host Penn State, last year's NCAA runner-up. Among his wins were the fifth and eighth-place finishers at last year's NCAA Championships.
"James has really grown during his career as a Tar Heel and he continues to improve," UNC coach Matt Jednak said. "He's working hard in practice and we're seeing that pay off for him. He had a very strong meet at Penn State against tough competition and it's great to see him recognized by the ACC in this way."
The ACC women's honoree was Duke junior Julia Gianneschi. These are the first conference weekly honors of the 2019-20 season.
Mulligan and the Tar Heels are back in action this weekend, fencing on Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
