GAME 19 NOTEBOOK
• Carolina is 8-10 overall, including 1-6 in ACC play. The Tar Heels are coming off a 79-77 loss in double-overtime at Virginia Tech. It was Carolina's third loss in the last six games in which held a halftime lead.
• Carolina was without four of its top players at Blacksburg and played just seven players against the Hokies, including four who played at least 45 minutes (48:21 by Garrison Brooks, 48:00 by Andrew Platek, 47:21 by Leaky Black and 45:53 by Justin Pierce).
• It was the first time four Tar Heels played at least 45 minutes in a game since a quadruple overtime win at Tulane on 2/14/1976 (58 by Phil Ford, 56 by John Kuester, 51 by Mitch Kupchak and 49 by Walter Davis).
• Virginia Tech won despite UNC holding the Hokies to 36.9 percent shooting from the floor. It was the fourth time this season an opponent shot under 40 percent from the floor in a win over UNC (Virginia, Wofford, at Pitt and at Virginia Tech). In the previous four seasons, the Tar Heels were 52-3 when holding the opponents under 40 percent. This season, UNC is 7-4 in those games.
• Miami is 10-8 overall and 2-6 in the ACC. The Hurricanes have lost three in a row, including 89-59 at Duke on Jan. 21.Â
• Miami has started the same lineup in all 18 of its games; Carolina has started seven different lineups in its 18 games.
• Carolina has lost five in a row overall and six consecutive ACC games. It's the first five-game losing streak since 2003.
• This is the first time UNC has lost six consecutive ACC games and the first time UNC has a 1-6 record in ACC play.
• UNC has not lost six in a row since the 2001-02 season.
• This is only the second time in 32 seasons a Roy Williams team has lost five or more games in a row (eight consecutive at Kansas in 1988-89).Â
• Carolina's 10 losses in its first 18 games are the most since the 2001-02 team went 6-12 in the first 18.
• The Tar Heels are 4-5 at home this season (4-4 at the Smith Center and 0-1 at Carmichael). UNC lost five home games in 2010 and 2015 and has not dropped six at home since 2002.
• Carolina has lost 10 of its last 13 games since beginning the season with wins in its first five games.Â
• The Tar Heels are 2-7 since leading scorer Cole Anthony was sidelined with a right knee injury.
• Carolina started its seventh different lineup of the season in the 79-77 double overtime loss at Virginia Tech. Last season, the Tar Heels used two starting lineups – one for 35 games and one for a single game.
• The seven starting lineups are the most by the Tar Heels in a season since 2013-14, when they also used seven (including Senior Day).
• Sophomore Leaky Black has started the last three games at the point. He was the fourth to start at the point this season. Cole Anthony (nine games), K.J. Smith (three), Jeremiah Francis (three) and Black have each started at the point. In 2007-08, Roy Williams started three players at the point (Ty Lawson, Quentin Thomas and Bobby Frasor), the previous high in the Williams Era (2003-present).
• Brandon Robinson did not play at Virgini Tech due to lingering neck soreness from a two-car accident he was in on Jan. 11. He is questionable for the Miami game.
• Seven different Tar Heels have combined to miss a total of 57 games due to injury thus far this season: Sterling Manley (all 18 games– left knee surgery on 12/12/19); Anthony Harris (13– including the first eight games due to left knee injury from high school, and five games after right knee surgery on 1/4/2020); Jeremiah Francis (nine games– the first eight due to a left knee injury from high school and the Clemson game due to soreness in the left knee); Cole Anthony (last nine games– right knee surgery on 12/16/19); Brandon Robinson (first four games– right ankle and Virginia Tech due to neck soreness after a car accident on 1/11/20); Andrew Platek (two games– left ankle) and Leaky Black (one game– turf toe, right foot).
• The 57 missed games are the most by scholarship players since the 2011-12 season (63 games) and the third most in the Roy Williams Era (64 in 2008-09).
• In 2011-12, Leslie McDonald (38), Dexter Strickland (19), John Henson (3), Kendall Marshall (2) and P.J. Hairston (1) accounted for the 63 missed games.
• In 2008-09, Marcus Ginyard (34), Tyler Zeller (23), Tyler Hansbrough (4) and Ty Lawson (3) totaled 64 missed games, most in the Williams Era.
