CHAPEL HILL – No. 1 North Carolina jumped out to an early lead over No. 3 Clemson on Thursday afternoon and earned a 2-0 victory at Dorrance Field.
Prior to Thursday's matchup, Clemson had not surrendered a goal in 2020, but Sam Meza quickly put the anecdote to rest with her first career goal in the sixth minute.
After Isabel Cox dribbled around two Clemson defenders and crossed the ball from right-to-left in the box, Meza finished to put the Tar Heels up early.
Rachel Jones put the Tar Heels up 2-0 in the 25th minute after she buried a penalty kick in the left side of the net. Jones' goal was her third of the season and second penalty kick goal, which paces the Tar Heels in both categories.
The teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half with North Carolina up 2-0 at the break.
North Carolina almost put away a third goal in the 69th minute but offsides negated the Tar Heel goal.
Claudia Dickey earned her fourth win and third-straight clean sheet against the Tigers. The Tar Heel goalkeeper recorded a pair of saves in the victory.
The Tar Heels outshot the Tigers 13-5 in the match with North Carolina holding the advantage in corner kicks as well, 6-1.
North Carolina's back line, highlighted by Maycee Bell and Julia Dorsey, was magnificent the entire afternoon and allowed just six Clemson shots overall and two shots on goal. The two shots on goal for the Tigers were less than Clemson's goals in each of its prior games (Miami – 4, Virginia Tech – 3, Virginia – 3).
The Tar Heels return to the pitch on Oct. 8 against Virginia at Dorrance Field. The match is slated to begin at 8 p.m. on ACC Network.
