CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team plays its third consecutive home game on Friday, hosting Syracuse for a 6 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Karen Shelton Stadium. The Tar Heels are 4-1 overall (2-1 ACC) and the Orange is 1-2 (1-1 ACC).
The game is not open to the general public, but will be televised live on the ACC Network. Click here to watch online.
UNC is coming off back-to-back home turf wins over Virginia last Sunday and Monday. Syracuse's last game was Saturday, when it beat Duke 4-3 in a neutral-site game played in Virginia Beach, Va.
Tar Heel notes:
• Carolina has outscored its opponents 11-2 over the past three games.
• Seven different Tar Heel players have at least one goal this season.
• UNC has scored just twice in the first quarter this fall. The Tar Heels have been the most prolific in the third quarter, with six goals in that period.
• Carolina's loss at Louisville on Oct. 2 snapped a 47-game winning streak, then the longest active one in Division I athletics.
• This is the second of two consecutive weekends at home for the Tar Heels. UNC hosted Virginia for games on Sunday and Monday. After Friday's game, Duke visits Shelton Stadium on Sunday for a noon game on ACC Network. It's the teams' second meeting of the season and won't count in the ACC standings.
Noting the matchup:
• UNC won last year's matchup 3-1 in Syracuse on Oct. 12, 2019. Erin Matson and then-seniors Catherine Hayden and Marissa Creatore scored goals in the game. Seven of UNC's current starters were in the opening lineup for that contest.
• The teams last met in Chapel Hill on Sept. 29, 2018, with UNC winning 5-1. Matson scored twice and current senior Bryn Boylan also had a goal.
• The last Orange win in the series was in the 2015 NCAA Championship game, which Syracuse won 4-2 on Nov. 22, 2015, in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Orange also won that year's regular season matchup, 4-2 in Syracuse on Sept. 12. The teams met three times that year, with UNC winning 2-1 in the ACC Championship in Charlottesville, Va. Current volunteer assistant coach Lauren Moyer was a starter for that Carolina team.
• UNC leads the overall series with Syracuse 11-6.
