Inside The Numbers: FSU Game
October 19, 2020 | Football
Inside the Numbers (ITN) is a new feature that can be found exclusively on GoHeels.com each week following a Carolina football game. Here you will find news and numbers focused around the Tar Heels on the gridiron.
PFF PERFORMERS
• According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Sam Howell (91.6) and Trey Morrison (83.6) graded out as the best Tar Heels players on offense and defense, respectively, in the game against Florida State.
• Howell's grade was the top figure among all Power 5 quarterbacks this past week, slightly edging out Clemson's Trevor Lawrence at 90.8.
• For the season, Howell is fourth nationally with an 88.1 rating among P5 QB's that have attempted more than 20 passes.
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING
• Javonte Williams is tied for the lead among Power 5 running backs with 28 first downs in 2020. He is tied third with 16 runs of 10+ yards, while Michael Carter is fifth with 15. Both star backs have exactly 257 yards after contact this season, the eighth best figure in the P5.
VIP ONLY
• Javonte Williams and Clemson's Travis Etienne are the only two running backs in the country that have compiled over 400 rushing yards and over 200 receiving yards this season.
TWO-BACK SYSTEM
• Carter and Williams are the only pair of teammates nationally to average more than 100 yards rushing per game (among teams that have played more than one game).
• The two have combined to average 220 yards on the ground this season. Carter is 7th in the nation with 119.5 yards, while Williams is 19th with 100.5 yards per game.
• Williams' nine total TDs (seven rush, two receiving) are third most in the country. His seven rushing TDs are fourth nationally and tied for the ACC lead.
• Against Virginia Tech, Carter (229) and Williams (224) became the first pair of Power 5 teammates to post at least 224 yards from scrimmage since Michael Crabtree (237) and Danny Amendola (233) did it for Texas Tech in 2007.
• Carter and Williams combined for 475 all-purpose yards against Virginia Tech. That is the most yards by a pair of running backs in the ACC going back at least 15 seasons.
AERIAL ATTACK
• Sam Howell has thrown six touchdown passes over the last two games, and five of the six have gone for 25 yards or longer. In fact, four were 30+ yards in length (33, 37, 38 and 43).
• Dyami Brown, who tied the school record with 12 receiving TDs in 2019, has hauled in three touchdowns in the last two weeks from 25, 37 and 43 yards out.
• Brown's 16 career receiving TDs are tied for eighth most in program history.
• Dazz Newsome continues to be the active leader in receptions (148) in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
• Beau Corrales averaged 35.3 yards per catch at Florida State. He had a career-high 141 yards and scored his 12th career TD.
FSU FALLOUT
• It may have been Carolina's first setback of the season last time out at Florida State, but there are still plenty of positives that came out of the game.
• UNC's defense pitched a shutout in the second half to get within 31-28, after trailing 31-7 at halftime.
• The offense managed 558 total yards with Sam Howell throwing for 374 yards, second most in his collegiate career. He had 283 yards alone after halftime.
CLOSE CALLS
• Since Mack Brown took back over the program in 2019, Carolina owns a 10-7 overall record.
• All seven losses have been by seven points or less with two setbacks coming in overtime.
• Nine of Carolina's 13 games in 2019 were decided by seven points or fewer. That was the most by any team in the AP Poll era going back to 1936.
• UNC lost 43-41 in six overtimes at Virginia Tech in the longest game in ACC history.
• Carolina won 20-17 over Duke, marking the first time since 2010 that three or more wins have come by four points or less.
