Tar Heels & Tigers Claw To 3-3 Tie In 2OT
October 27, 2020 | Men's Soccer
Herrera, Key White and Lucas del Rosario scored goals for the Tar Heels. Giovanni Montesdeoca, Milo Garvanian and Matt Constant had assists.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of the second half after a scoreless first 45 minutes and seemed to be in control, only to see Carolina tie the game at 2-2 not long thereafter.
After Clemson quickly scored again to go ahead 3-2, Herrera scored in the 87th minute to make it 3-3. Neither team scored in the two overtime periods.
Alec Smir made five saves in goal for the Tar Heels.
Kimarni Smith scored two goals early in the half for a 2-0 Tiger lead, then Carolina responded with back-to-back goals to tie it at 2-2. Clemson responded with a goal by Grayson Barber in the 78th minute for a 3-2 advantage.
Nine minutes later, Carolina scored on a set play. Garvanian took a free kick into the box to Constant, who headed the ball down to the left, where Herrera scored to make the score 3-all.
To get the scoring started early in the second half, Smith scored at the 58:08 mark on a free kick from just outside the box after a Tar Heel foul in the 58th minute. Just 36 seconds later, Smith scored again.
Seven minutes later, while making his first appearance of the season, White stole the ball from a Clemson player in the Tiger half of the field, then raced into the box and scored from the left to cut the lead to 2-1, in the 66th minute with his first collegiate goal.
With just over 18 minutes left in regulation, pressure by the Tar Heel defense gave UNC the ball in the midfield. Montesdeoca then took the ball down the right side of the box and fed del Rosario, who scored to tie the score at 2-2.
The Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the 78th minute when Barber got behind the Tar Heel defense, took a well-timed pass from Callum Johnson and scored.
Herrera tied it in the 87th minute, taking assists from Garvanian and Constant and scoring. Not long later, Clemson looked to retake the lead with 1:16 to go when Smir's punch save of James Brighton's shot kept the game tied.
Clemson remains unbeaten in its last 21 games at Riggs Field.
Carolina will return to action on Sunday Nov. 1 at home against North Carolina State.
