Field Hockey Hosts Wake To Wrap Up Regular Season
October 30, 2020 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team wraps up the highly-irregular 2020 regular season on Friday with a home game against Wake Forest. The teams meet in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at 4:30 p.m. at Karen Shelton Stadium.
UNC comes into the game 6-1 overall and 3-1 in ACC play. Wake is 2-6 overall (1-3 ACC). The teams also played to open the season, meeting on Sept. 20 in Winston-Salem for a nonconference matchup the Tar Heels won 3-1.
The game is not open to the public but it will be televised live on the ACC Network. Watch here online.
Think Pink
Friday's game is UNC's Pink Game and the team will wear pink warm-up shirts as well as pink wristbands. During the month of October, the Tar Heels have raised funds for UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center's Power of Pink campaign. The team set a fundraising goal of $5,000 and has met that goal. More information here.
The Matchup
• UNC leads the series with Wake Forest 55-21-4. The Tar Heels have won the last six meetings, with Wake's last victory in the series coming on Sept. 8, 2017, 3-1 in Winston-Salem.
• UNC won the first meeting of the season, 3-1 in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Sept. 20 in the season opener for both teams. That game did not count in the conference standings.
• Tar Heel scorers in that game were Cassie Sumfest, Erin Matson and Meredith Sholder, in that order. For Sumfest and Sholder, it was a triumphant return after watching the entire 2019 season (including the national championship win on that same Kentner Stadium turf) from the sidelines.
• Following that game, Sholder was honored as ACC and National Offensive Player of the Week and senior Bryn Boylan took ACC and National Defensive honors.
• The teams last met in Chapel Hill during the 2018 season, when they met twice at Shelton Stadium. On Oct. 6, 2018, UNC beat WFU 5-1 on the day that the University dedicated Karen Shelton Stadium. The Tar Heels also hosted the ACC Tournament that year and the two met again in the championship game on Nov. 4, with UNC winning 7-2. Carolina also hosted the ACC-Big Ten Challenge that season, so Wake Forest played an additional two games in Chapel Hill, facing Michigan and Iowa to start the 2018 campaign.
Tar Heel Stats Leaders
Goals: Erin Matson has six, Eva Smolenaars has five, and Hannah Griggs has three.
Assists: Matson also leads the team in assists with six. Madison Orobono and Abby Pitcairn have three each.
