Bailey Again Named To Wade Watch List
November 17, 2020 | Women's Basketball
For the second year in a row, North Carolina's Janelle Bailey has been named to the preseason "Wade Watch" list, as announced Tuesday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Bailey, a senior center from Charlotte, is one of 30 players recognized as preseason candidates for the 2021 Wade Trophy, which goes to the national player of the year. She was recently named to the preseason list for the Lisa Leslie Award as the nation's top center and also was named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team.
As a junior in 2019-20, Bailey earned All-ACC honors as she averaged 14.5 points and a team-best 9.3 rebounds per game, both in the conference's top 10.
The "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the Wade Trophy, which goes to the national player of the year, is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2020-21 season.

The Wade Trophy — now in its 44th year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
