Tar Heels Open On A High Note With Big Win Over Highlanders
November 25, 2020 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina opened the 2020-21 women's basketball season and welcomed its freshmen to college play Wednesday with an emphatic win over visiting Radford, 90-61 at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels improved to 1-0 heading into two more games this week, at home on Saturday and Sunday.
In her Tar Heel debut, guard Deja Kelly led all scorers with 19 points. She was one of six UNC players – and one of four freshmen – in double figures. Graduate student Petra Holešínská scored 14 points in her first Carolina game, hitting four of her eight three-point attempts. Alyssa Ustby, another freshman, scored 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. Freshman Kennedy Todd-Williams scored 12 points and led UNC with four assists. The Tar Heels got 10 points each inside from senior Janelle Bailey and freshman Anya Poole.
Poole and Todd-Williams just missed registering double-doubles in their debut, with a team-best nine rebounds each.
Radford (0-1) was led by Tina Lindenfield with 13 points. Three other Highlanders also hit double figures.
UNC led from the first minute of play and was ahead by a comfortable margin of 46-30 at halftime. Radford made a third-quarter run to close within 10 points, but never got closer.
Carolina's biggest lead of the game was 32 in the final seconds.
The Tar Heels started three newcomers – Holešínská, Kelly and Todd-Williams – along with All-ACC returnees Bailey and sophomore Malu Tshitenge, who led the league in offensive boards last season and continued that trend with five against the Highlanders.
In an illustration of the team's improved depth, UNC got 33 points off the bench, seven more than the Tar Heels' best in 2019-20.
UNC led 48-18 in points in the paint and 28-10 in second-chance points.
The Tar Heels return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against UNCG. High Point visits Sunday, also for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
