Educate and Advocate: Black Lives Matter Movement
November 27, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Throughout the 2020-21 campaign, the UNC women's basketball team will highlight various causes, dedicating the season to advocating for and bringing awareness to issues that are near and dear to the Tar Heel student-athletes and coaching staff.
The team plays back-to-back games on Saturday (UNCG) and Sunday (High Point), and has dedicated those games to the Black Lives Matter movement.
During the 2020-21 season, each player will wear a special team-designed patch on her jersey. The entire team had input in the patch design, which was then created by UNC student Marcus Richardson. The patch includes the team motto – Strong on own, best together – as well as the following words and phrases: Together, Power, Unity, Equality, Anti-racism, Family, Now, Change, Love, One and Say their Names.
To show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement, the Tar Heels participated in a student-athlete march on Franklin Street in August as part of the #MarchOnMyCampus2020 movement.
The Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted many disparities in the U.S., including:
• Black Americans are shot at a disproportionate rate – They account for less than 13 percent of the U.S. population, but are killed by police at more than twice the rate of white Americans. (Washington Post)
• Studies show that killings of Black Americans lead to an enormous impact on mental health, accounting for as many as 50 million additional days of poor mental health each year among Black Americans. (NAACP.org)
To support the Black Lives Matter movement, we encourage education around the Black experience in America and ways to be an anti-racist and an ally.
