Longo Named Broyles Award Semifinalist
December 15, 2020 | Football
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Phil Longo, North Carolina's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, is a semifinalist for the 2020 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches.
Under the guidance of Longo during his second season in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heel offense ranks fourth nationally by averaging 556.6 yards per game, a figure that is on pace to shatter the program record of 486.9 yards/game set in 2014.
Carolina's 43.0 points per game is fifth among Power 5 clubs, while UNC's 249.1 rushing yards per outing is second in the P5.
Longo's tutoring of sophomore Sam Howell has been a master class. Howell's 65 touchdown passes are already second most at Carolina in only 24 career games. In addition, the 65 touchdowns are second in ACC history by a sophomore signal caller, one shy of Trevor Lawrence total through two seasons at Clemson.
The 15 semi-finalists are:
ALABAMA, Steve Sarkisian, Offensive Coordinator / QB
BYU, Jeff Grimes, Offensive Coordinator
CINCINNATI, Marcus Freeman, Defensive Coordinator / LB
COASTAL CAROLINA, Chad Staggs, Defensive Coordinator / LB
FLORIDA, Brian Johnson, Offensive Coordinator / QB
INDIANA, Kane Wommack, Defensive Coordinator / LB

A selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA narrowed the list of nominees to 15 semi-finalists. Five finalists will be selected from the list of semi-finalists then an overall winner.
