RALEIGH N.C. – The North Carolina women's gymnastics team lost a tough fight to NC State in Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh on Saturday. An impressive performance for the home team made it difficult for the Tar Heels to come back after a few mishaps on the uneven bars in the first rotation. NC State defeated Carolina 196.250 to 193.375.
The Heels opened the meet on the uneven bars and were unable to bounce back after a disappointing showing last week against Pittsburgh. Three of the Tar Heels six performers fell on this apparatus. Seniors Mekyllah Williams and Grace Donaghy demonstrated incredible leadership despite these mishaps and posted a 9.600 and 9.775, respectively. However, it was freshman Elizabeth Culton who earned the team-leading score with 9.825.
After the first rotation, the Tar Heels were trailing NC State by 1.825 points. Nonetheless, the team moved on to vault and posted season-high scores. Seniors Khazia Hislop and Mikayla Robinson earned first and second place finishes with scores of 9.900 and 9.875. Senior Alexis Allen scored a 9.775 in Carolina's effort to make up some ground following their first rotation. Following the second rotation, NC State led by 2.025 points.
Carolina continued on to the floor exercise for the third rotation, where they were able to secure a team score of 49.125. This is the third time this season that the team has broken 49.000 on the event, and they currently rank 20th in the nation as a group. Culton led the team with a career-high 9.850, followed close behind by Hislop, Robinson and freshman Hannah Nam who all scored 9.825. Junior Lily Dean also added 9.800 to Carolina's total.
The Tar Heels finished the night on the balance beam, where the team posted a solid 48.450. Nam and Hislop led the team with scores of 9.800, while Allen was close behind with a 9.775.
Elizabeth Culton finished in first place in the all-around competition, defeating both a junior and senior from NC State. Culton totaled 38.750 over the four events.
