#1 Heels Host Saturday Doubleheader, Raise Latest Title Banner
February 14, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - Newly minted No. 1 North Carolina is back home this Saturday for a doubleheader against in-state foes East Carolina and Charlotte inside Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC hosts the Pirates at 11 a.m. and the 49ers at 4 p.m.
At the conclusion of the match with ECU, the Tar Heels will unveil their latest ITA National Team Indoor Championship banner. Carolina won the 2020 indoor championship this past Monday with a 4-0 shutout of UCLA, the fourth title for the program.
Fans not in attendance for either games on Saturday can follow along with live stats and a live video stream.
Carolina took over the top spot in the latest national polls this week after winning the indoor team title in Chicago. The Tar Heels are off to a 10-0 start to the season and will put its 26-match home winning streak on the line this weekend.
North Carolina ranked singles players
Sara Daavettila (4), Alexa Graham (7), Cameron Morra (9), Alle Sanford (23), Kacie Harvey (59), Makenna Jones (101).
North Carolina ranked doubles teams
Jones/Morra (4), Daavettila/Graham (6), Jones/Sanford (29), Sanford/Yarlagadda (41)
East Carolina will play its fifth and sixth consecutive road matches this weekend by taking on Campbell on Friday and then Carolina come Saturday. The Pirates are 2-2 after picking up wins over UNCG and James Madison in their two most recent matches. They started the 2020 season with a loss at top-10 NC State and VCU.
Announced on Jan. 30, ECU head coach Tom Morris, a North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame inductee and East Carolina's all-time women's tennis wins leader, will retire as the program's head coach effective March 1.
When he steps down from a position he has held since 1998, Morris will cap an illustrious career that has included multiple national honors on the court, in the classroom and in the community. Associate head coach Kirstin Burgess, who was a four-year letterwinner as a student-athlete under Morris from 2003 to 2006 and a member of his coaching staff since 2012, will serve as the Pirates' interim head coach.
Charlotte, under the guidance of second-year head coach Anthony Davison, are off to a 7-2 record this season and will bring a four-match winning streak entering Saturday. The 49ers will take on NC Central on Saturday morning in Durham, before making the quick trip to Chapel Hill for the 4 p.m. match in Chapel Hill.
Charlotte's lone losses thus far have come against ACC foes Clemson and NC State.
The Tar Heels open ACC play next weekend in Florida with a Friday match at No. 4 Florida State and at Miami on Sunday. Both matches are slated for an 11 a.m. start.
