UNC Splits Day Two as Coach Papa Earns 1,300th Career Win
February 15, 2020 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Although No. 11 Michigan bested UNC in Saturday's opener, No. 25 North Carolina bounced back to defeat Wisconsin, 4-3, on the second day of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge as head coach Donna J. Papa picked up her 1,300th career win.
"I was more concerned about winning the game," Papa said, "but if 1300 wins what the byproduct is, that's great. I'm thankful for all the players and assistant coaches who've helped get me to this point. It's more about everybody along the way, over the years who have contributed to helping us be successful. To me that's the most important thing. It's very humbling because it's a big number. It makes me appreciate that I've had the opportunity to coach so many great athletes and with supportive administration and coaches. Again, it's a milestone number, but most important to me is that we keep winning and improving every day."
Although Carolina was in scoring position early, No. 11 Michigan blanked the Tar Heels, 4-0, on Saturday morning. The Tar Heels bounced back in Saturday's finale, outlasting the Badgers, 4-3 behind a complete game from Hannah George to earn Papa's 1300th career win.
"Although the first game didn't go the way we wanted, to be able to come back and finish strong builds momentum for this team," Papa said. "Hannah was great in the circle, especially striking out the leadoff at the end who homered to start. We made a lot of nice defensive plays. Wisconsin is a really good team, but Hannah moved the ball well. We were able to pass the bat and get runs on the board to back her up in the circle."
After the second day of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Carolina improves to 5-3 while Michigan and Wisconsin sit at 8-0 and 5-3, respectively.
