Lancellotti Shines In Doubleheader Split Against DBU
February 22, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- No. 22 North Carolina (6-1) extended its winning streak to six games after a 9-0 win against Dallas Baptist (5-1) before suffering its first loss of the season, 6-3, in game two of a chilly doubleheader inside Boshamer Stadium.
Joey Lancellotti put together an incredible performance on the mound for the Tar Heels as the game one starter. He tossed 7.0 innings while striking out seven batters and did not give up a run. Angel Zarate put on a display with his bat, going two-for-four with three RBI.
In game two, Aaron Sabato finished the game two-for-three as the sole multi-hit Tar Heel batter.
Will Sandy slid to 0-1 on the year as the game two starter. Kyle Mott, Caden O'Brien and Gage Gillian each saw action out of the bullpen, with Mott striking out four.

On thoughts about the day overall
"Doubleheaders, they are what they are. That's why you try to avoid them, they're long days. I like the way our kids responded. Obviously, right out of the gate in game one we scored three runs and Joey, I thought that was the best he's looked as a starter since he's been here. You saw what kind of club they have offensively in the second game, so it kind of showed you what he did. It was a complete game for us in game one. Anytime you get your starter throwing that well and you get him a three-run lead then a six-run lead, things are going well for you. Game two I thought we had our chances early, with a couple guys on base. You go back through the whole game and look where you had opportunities there early to score. I saw a lot of good things today. I thought our three freshmen catchers were sensational back there for 18 innings."
Aaron Sabato, Sophomore First Baseman
On today's performance
"We started off slow then we started getting back. I've been doing a lot of work with Coach [Wierzbicki]. He's one of the best coaches I've ever had. I have been able to get back with him and I am learning to really trust myself and trust my approach. We knew the scouting report on these guys, they throw a lot of fast balls and they've got a high spin rate, so they love to attack with the fast ball. I tried to stay on the heater and not really think about the off speed until two strikes. I was just going out looking for a pitch to hit. They threw a couple fast balls over the middle of the plate, so I was just lucky to put a good swing on one."

On today's game plan
"I thought game one went well. It was fun getting out there and having decent weather actually after the snow storm. Having the seventh day of rest was also pretty nice. Coach Gaines does a great job with scouting reports and we felt like we were prepared for the first game. I think we went at them effectively in the first game and were able to keep them off balance by switching sides of the plate. The offense putting early runs on the board also boosts your confidence and slows their momentum too, so that was awesome after the first inning being up like we were."
